FAQ
What might a session with Samuel look like?
A typical session with me will begin with an initial check-in and preparation to enter into the therapeutic space. From there we may begin to discuss what you’d like to explore or address in the session, followed by either a pre-planned or intuitive creative process which responds to what was discussed. After that we may have a discussion which engages and processes the creative work and what it had to offer you; this process may also include other creative modalities. Within therapy I may also offer some psycho-education on processes of the brain and body to help facilitate understanding about psychological processes that are occurring in you. I will also dynamically adapt the session to your needs in the moment, shifting the session to address what is best for you within the therapeutic space, meaning that each session could look quite different from each other. As each session ends I will always take a moment to formally end and exit the therapy process in order for you to safely take what you have learnt from the session and return back to your life.
Do I need to be artistic or an artist to receive Art Therapy?
You do not need any previous artistic training or experience in order to receive the benefits of art therapy. Art therapy provides an opportunity to explore yourself, your feelings and your experiences through various forms of media and communication that you might not otherwise have used before. This can be a great experience of encountering parts of yourself which you have not connected with for a long time, even for those who do have an art background. Art therapy focuses less on creating an end product or 'artwork' and more on connecting to the process of creating and creativity itself.
Do I need to bring anything?
You only need to bring yourself. All art materials are provided in the studio for in-person sessions. However, therapy is a collaborative environment and you are more than welcome to bring anything extra into the sessions which you would like to work with. Whether that be a specific artistic medium, an artwork in progress, or something you would like to share and talk about.
What happens to the artwork I make in therapy?
Anything you make in therapy is your personal expression and creation, you are free to take it with you or do whatever you would like with it. Should you choose to leave it, I will store it for you in a secure folder which we can view in future sessions, work on it more, or for you to take with you at a later date.
